Context

In the internship project collaborating with Human Elephant Learning Programs (H-ELP), my task is to create an animated short film that explores how animals in nature "get high," discussing various ways animals find happiness, euphoria, and relaxation in their natural environments. I combined 2D and 3D animation to create an engaging style through the use of different textures and colors. This internship project not only provides a valuable creative experience but also communicates interesting knowledge about the natural world and animal behavior through animation, aiming to attract potential donors.

Concept

During the initial phase of our internship project, our primary focus was around crafting a comprehensive project plan. This plan encompassed the conceptual and structural aspects of the animation we were undertaking. This stage involved defining critical elements such as animation aesthetics, style, technique, and script.

Design

Ultimately, after reviewing the available options, the client chose the second style. This marked a significant milestone in the project’s conceptualization, setting the direction for the animation’s development. This phase involves several critical tasks, including character design, storyboard creation, animatic development, and voiceover preparation. Given the client’s preference for a 3D animation style, my initial focus was on creating animal characters with straightforward shapes.

Challenge

Throughout this project, I embarked on a transformative journey in the field of animation production. This not only enriched my skill set but also offered profound insights into this dynamic field. One standout lesson that emerged during this experience was the paramount importance of a well-structured concept document. This document, I realized, serves as the keystone of any animation project. It functions as both a project guide and a vehicle for fostering clear and effective communication with the client.
